TikTok rules

Why does TikTok call my clips unoriginal content?

TikTok works to keep unoriginal content out of the For You feed. A clip that is somebody else's video re-uploaded with little or no change of your own fits the description - and then it is not removed, it is just not shown, which is why the views stop with no explanation.

What TikTok counts as unoriginal

TikTok's own originality guidance names three shapes, and all three describe a lazy clip.

Copied completely

The original video posted again as it was. A different account, the same file.

Repurposed with no creative edit

A cut from a longer video, posted without anything added: no captions, no framing for vertical, no edit that makes it a clip rather than a slice.

Stitched with nothing new

Several sources put together with little or no information or value added. Compilations are the usual example.

The kind of edit that makes it yours Left: the moment cut out as it was. Right: the clip opens on its strongest line, then plays from the start - a decision about the clip, not a copy of it.

How to make a clip that is clearly yours

None of this is a trick. It is the editing that makes a clip worth watching anyway.

  1. Choose the moment. The selection is your work. A minute that stands on its own is already different from the two-hour source.
  2. Frame it for a phone. A crop that follows the person speaking, or a stream layout with the camera on top, is an edit nobody makes by re-uploading.
  3. Add the words. Captions, a title, a hook in the first second. Viewers read along, and the clip carries something the source never had.
  4. Post from permission. A clip made for a campaign has the creator's go-ahead. Clipping somebody who never asked for it is a different risk from the algorithm, and a bigger one.

What this does not cover

Being shown on the For You feed and being paid by TikTok are separate questions. TikTok's Creator Rewards Program asks for original content filmed and produced by yourself, and clips of another creator are not that, however well they are edited. Clippers earn through the creator's campaign, not through TikTok's own fund.

For the other thing that quietly costs reach, watermarks and reach. And for what happens when the owner of the footage objects, why clips get claimed.

Questions

Unoriginal content

Will TikTok ban my account for unoriginal content?

Usually the first thing that happens is that the videos stop being recommended. Repeated reposting of other people's work can lead to further restrictions under TikTok's guidelines, so it is worth fixing before it adds up.

Is there a way to bypass the unoriginal content check?

Tricks like flipping the video or speeding it up do not add anything of your own, and they are exactly what the policy describes. The way that lasts is an edit a viewer can see: the moment, the framing, the captions.

Does adding captions make a clip original?

Captions help, but on their own they are a thin layer. A chosen moment, framed for vertical and opened on its strongest line, is a much clearer case.

Can I appeal?

TikTok lets you appeal decisions on your videos from the app. An appeal goes better when the clip plainly carries your own edit.

Clips that are edited, not re-uploaded

SnapDub picks the moment, frames it for vertical, captions it and opens on the hook - the edits that make a clip a clip.
