What do you actually keep from 1,000 views?

You read one number online, then your dashboard shows a much smaller one. Both can be right: one is what the advertiser paid, the other is what reached you. Here is the sum that connects them, with your own numbers in it.

CPM is what the advertiser pays. RPM is what reaches you.

Two numbers per thousand, counted over different things.

CPM is the price an advertiser pays for 1,000 ad views. It is counted over ads, not over your audience, and it is the number people quote when they talk about how much a topic or a country is worth.

RPM is what you receive per 1,000 views of your video, every view counted, including the ones where no ad played at all. Two things sit between the two numbers: how many of your views actually had an ad on them, and how much of the ad money the platform passes on to you.

With made-up round numbers to show the sum: if advertisers pay 10 per 1,000 ad views, half your views carry an ad, and your share is half, you keep 10 × 0.5 × 0.5 = 2.50 per 1,000 views. That is a quarter of the CPM, and nothing went wrong.

Why short videos pay less per view

If your Shorts or TikTok RPM looks tiny next to your long videos, that is how the format works rather than a mistake. Three reasons, none of them about you.

The ad is not inside your video

A long video can carry ads before it and in the middle of it. A short one is over before an ad would fit, so in a feed the ads play between videos rather than on any one of them.

A view is cheaper to make

In the time one long video is watched, somebody can scroll through dozens of short ones, and each counts as a view. The number of ads does not grow at the same speed, so every 1,000 views has fewer ad views behind it.

The pot is shared first

Where short videos are paid from a shared pool, the pool is split between many creators and sometimes other costs, such as music, before your part is worked out. Each platform publishes its own rules for this.

We do not quote a rate for any platform. Rates change by country, topic and month, and the only one that is true for you is the one in your own dashboard. What each platform's programme actually requires is on does short-form video actually pay.

Ad revenue is not the only way views turn into money. Clipping campaigns pay per view on their own terms, and the clipper pay calculator does that sum. And if the question is how many posts it takes to get the views in the first place, count the posts to a million views.

When each view is worth little

More posts, without more editing

A low number per view is why volume matters on short video. Decide the look once and every long recording after that comes back as finished vertical clips, already styled, so posting more does not mean editing more.

FAQ

Questions, answered

What is the difference between CPM and RPM?

CPM is what an advertiser pays for 1,000 ad views. RPM is what you receive for 1,000 views of your video, counting every view, with or without an ad. RPM is always lower, because not every view has an ad on it and the platform keeps part of the money.

Why is my Shorts or TikTok RPM so much lower than on long videos?

A short video has no room for an ad of its own, so ads play between videos in the feed rather than on yours, and on some platforms the money is pooled and split between many creators. People also watch many short videos in the time of one long one, so there are fewer ads behind every 1,000 views.

What is a good RPM?

There is no honest single answer. It changes with the platform, the country your viewers are in, your topic and even the time of year. Anyone quoting one figure for everybody is guessing. The useful comparison is your own RPM against your own RPM last month.

Does this calculator send my numbers anywhere?

No. It is arithmetic done in the page. Nothing you type is transmitted or stored.
